Giving Chester's A Second Chance

A friend of mine and I went to Chester’s a few years back and had a not so pleasant experience.  This is the downstairs section of the Mill Wharf Restaurant.  This week I decided to give Chester’s another chance. My husband and I went at dusk and ordered oysters on the half shell, a salmon entrée, fried calamari, and a melon wrapped in prosciutto appetizer.  The food was satisfying but nothing special.  We sat by the window and enjoyed a lovely view of the boats coming in and out of the harbor.  Our server was pleasant but lacked knowledge of the food served and some professionalism.  I don’t think I will go back.  For the same entrée prices you can go to a restaurant such as Riva or Oro and enjoy better quality food for the same prices and not have to deal with a ladies restroom that is the equivalent to a 1970’s rundown girls high school locker room or feel like you are in one of Nantasket Beach’s bathhouses.   Although I hear the men’s restroom at Chester’s is much nicer than the ladies…..

Perhaps Chester’s has had its time like many of the old beach cottages that are seen on the coast of Scituate. These cottages you see may have boarded up windows, chipped paint, wood rot, and appear soul less.  However, if you look closer you will learn that at one time they were in perfect condition with blooming flower beds lining the lawn, children running through the sprinklers, adults playing cards on the porch, the scent of charcoal streaming through the air, with memories imbedded in the rafters of the ceiling that consist of the laughter and joy that took place here many years ago.  Often a family member or new investor will step up and put the time and dedication to renovate the house to what it once was.  Perhaps someone will do to Chesters just as people have done to the cottages along the Scituate Shore.

On a second note I would highly suggest the Mill Wharf Pub, which is located in the upstairs section of the restaurant.  This is one of my favorite spots for pub faire.  The buffalo chicken sandwich in my opinion is one of the best on the South Shore.  I would not suggest ordering seafood.  It tends to be overpriced and lacks quality.  However, if you are looking for great pub food, good beer, and a beautiful view this is the place to go.
