Twas the night before the first day of fall when I headed to the Derby Street Shops in Hingham. I wish I could say my goal was to look for something exciting like a high waisted wool skirt from Banana Republic’s light vintage Mad Men line. I am almost positive I would have had a better shopping experience. However, my main mission for this rendezvous was to replace my garlic press that had recently broke.
I price shopped at William Sonoma, Crate and Barrel, and Kohl’s. I wanted a nice steel garlic press that would be indestructible and pulverize those bad boys. I wanted to choose carefully in order to avoid getting stuck with some flimsy, plastic, cheap device, that would not be able to handle my intense pressing. William Sonoma did not have what I was looking for. Crate and Barrel had a nice solid one for $19.99. It had a nice cleaning attachment to help with all those holes that get clogged up with garlic guts. Lastly I decided to check out Kohl’s to see if they had a similar product that perhaps was on sale. I asked a sales clerk if they carried garlic presses and she steered me in the right direction of the cookware department.
All went downhill from that point on.
As I headed towards the back of the store I was bombarded with Christmas lights, Christmas music, Rudolph, Santa, fake snow, tinsel, multiple Christmas trees hoisted up on stands with colorful blinking lights blinding me in every direction.
Was this a sick joke? I quickly realized this was the real deal. It was a muggy September day in which I was donning shorts and still using the AC in my car as this store was putting out Christmas decor! To make a long story short I was so disconcerted by all of this Christmas incongruous hogwash that I had to leave the store. I never made it to the kitchen section. It was a similar feeling to finding a hair in my salad while out to eat. I lost my appetite for shopping and went home. For the time being I’ll get out my chef’s knife and do a little chop chop mash mash chop chop as I fancy up my mincing skills and hope for no accidents.
Eventually I may return to buy the press I saw at Crate and Barrel and pay a little extra if that’s what it takes to avoid Christmas décor and music in September and hopefully October. I enjoy seeing the pumpkins, mums/ chrysanthemums, candy corns, and other fall and Halloween items because Tis the Season. But Christmas stuff at this time of year…. Don’t get me wrong I love the holiday season. I am the type of person that will listen to Oldies 103.3 FM’s holiday music non-stop once it starts up around Thanksgiving until the end of Christmas Day. Unfortunately the others around me don’t embrace it the way I do so I am left to only listening to these delightful festive tunes on my own time.
Right now I want to enjoy my pumpkin spice latte…. two pumps please! I can’t begin to think about having a gingerbread latte. I am going to have to stretch and warm up to get ready of what is ahead....
Ba Humbug!
Have a happy holiday . Enjoy the turkey first.
